Wheelchair-accessible bathtubs make getting in and out of the tub easier and safer, for the bather and for the caregiver. They are made in the USA, in sizes for home and commercial bathrooms. There are two main designs, and which fits depends on how the user transfers.

Two ways an accessible tub helps

  • Out-swinging door. A door that swings out lets the user side-transfer into the tub from a seated position.
  • Cantilevered lip. A wide lip gives a surface to transfer onto, then lower into the tub. It suits bathers with good arm strength, or it can be used with a bathtub lift.

Tub or accessible shower?

If a bath is important, an accessible tub works. If the goal is simply easier bathing, an accessible shower is often simpler and takes less room.
