How to choose an ADA shower
- Roll-in or transfer. A roll-in shower lets a shower wheelchair roll straight in. A transfer shower is smaller: the user moves from a wheelchair onto a built-in seat. Not sure which fits? Read roll-in vs. transfer showers.
- Measure the inside. ADA sizes are clear inside dimensions, not the outside of the unit. Our ADA shower dimensions guide walks through the numbers.
- Seat. ADA seats mount 17 to 19 inches above the shower floor. Transfer showers include a seat; roll-in showers typically use a fold-down seat. See fold-down shower seat height, size and mounting.
- Grab bars. Walls must be reinforced where bars go, and our ADA grab bar guide shows heights and placement.
- One piece or several. A one-piece unit has no wall seams. Multi-piece units are assembled in the bathroom, which helps in tight doorways or hallways.

Send us your room size, narrowest doorway (width and height) and drain location, and we'll confirm the unit before you order. Large units ship by freight in a crate. ADA shower questions we hear
What is a roll-in shower?
A shower with no curb at the entry, so a wheelchair can roll straight in. An ADA roll-in shower also meets the 2010 ADA Standards for size, threshold, seat, grab bars and controls.
Do I need an ADA shower in my home?
No. The ADA Standards apply to public and commercial buildings, not private homes. At home, choose the size, threshold and seat that work for the person using the shower. ADA sizes are still a useful benchmark if you want room for a shower wheelchair or a seat.
What size is an ADA roll-in shower?
At least 30 inches deep x 60 inches wide inside for a standard roll-in (ADA 608.2.2), or 36 x 60 inches with a 36-inch front entry for the alternate type (ADA 608.2.3).
What size is an ADA transfer shower?
36 inches by 36 inches inside, with a seat.
How high can the threshold be on an ADA roll-in shower?
No more than 1/2 inch, and it has to be beveled if it's over 1/4 inch (ADA 608.7). Threshold height is measured against the finished floor, so the bathroom floor you install matters.
Is a curbless shower the same as an ADA roll-in shower?
Not always. Every ADA roll-in is curbless, but many curbless showers are smaller than 30 x 60 inches inside. They roll in, but they aren't ADA-sized.
