The Shower Base That Lived in the Hallway

We've heard a version of this story more than once, and it's the reason this button exists.

Measure twice, carry once

A homeowner measures the bathroom. The base fits the space with room to spare. Order placed, high-fives all around.

Delivery day arrives. Two grown adults carry the base down the hall, turn toward the bathroom door and stop.

They try tilting it. They try angling it. Someone suggests taking the door off its hinges. Someone else suggests, with total sincerity, "Maybe if we ask it nicely."

The bathroom was never the problem

The base would have fit the bathroom perfectly. Getting it there was the problem: the doorway, the trim, the tight turn at the end of the hall.

For a few days, the family had the nicest hallway decoration on the block.

Everyone laughs about it now. But nobody laughed that afternoon. And every bit of it could have been caught at the kitchen table with a spec sheet and a tape measure.

Floor plan showing the delivery path from the front door, down the hallway, around the turn and into the bathroom, with five numbered spots to measure: front door, hallway width, the turn, bathroom doorway and shower space
1 Front door
Including the storm door and trim.
2 Hallway width
Measure at the narrowest point.
3 The turn
Long bases need room to pivot.
4 Bathroom doorway
Usually the tightest spot.
5 Shower space
Compare it to the spec sheet.
The lesson: measure the path, not just the room. The spec sheet tells you the product's outside dimensions, so you can check every doorway and turn it has to pass through.

What People Worry About Before They Order

These are the questions we hear on the phone every week. Every one of them is a fair question.

1

"What if I order the wrong size?"

This is the big one. The spec sheet shows the outside dimensions and drain location, so you can compare them against your space, your doorways and your existing plumbing before you commit.

2

"Will my contractor know how to install it?"

Most good installers just want the instructions up front. Forward the documents before they quote the job, and they can plan the framing, subfloor and drain work instead of guessing on install day.

3

"Is this going to be harder than I think?"

Sometimes it's easier. Sometimes there's a step you didn't expect. Either way, it's better to know now. Reading the manufacturer's instructions first takes the mystery out of it.

4

"If I have a question, will anyone answer?"

Yes, and it'll be a person. Our Product Specialists talk through measurements, drains and project details every day, by phone, email or chat. You can also browse our Help Center.

Important distinction: worrying about these things doesn't mean you're overthinking it. It means you're doing it right. The people who ask the most questions before ordering tend to have the smoothest installs.

How Get Installation Documents Works

Not ready yet? That's fine. Every follow-up email includes a link to tell us when to check back, and we'll pause until the timing works for you. We'd rather be helpful than pesky.
While you're on the product page: open the Lead Time & Shipping Info tab too. Many of our shower bases are Made-Upon-Order, so knowing the lead time helps you schedule your installer.

Downloading a PDF vs. Having the Documents Sent to You

The documents are the same. What happens next isn't.

Download it yourself

Handy if you're at your desk and ready to read right now. Easy to lose once it lands in a folder with 400 other files named "document(3).pdf."

Send them to me

Lands in your inbox or text messages, ready to forward to a contractor, a plumber or a family member helping with the project. And it comes with people behind it.

A real person to ask If you call us A Product Specialist checks in

Do I have to buy first to get the installation instructions?

No.

The documents are free and there's no obligation. We want you to read them before you order, not after. It's much easier to catch a mismatch on paper than in your hallway.

Who Should Request the Documents?

Pretty much anyone touching the project. Here's how each person uses them.

Option 1

Homeowners

Check the size, drain location and entry style against your bathroom before you choose between a curbless shower pan and a curbed base.

Option 2

Contractors & plumbers

Plan framing, subfloor and drain work before the quote, especially on roll-in shower bases. A contractor package sends every document in one request.

Option 3

Family helping with the remodel

Helping someone you love plan a safer bathroom, even from three states away? Have the documents sent to you and loop in their local installer.

The right product + the right documents + a real person to ask

That's the whole idea. Get those three together and the install day becomes the boring part, which is exactly how it should be.

Why We Built It This Way

Since 2008, our goal has been simple: make homes easier, safer and better to live in, and make buying the products easy too.

We'd rather answer questions now

A question answered before you order costs five minutes. The same question after delivery can cost a week, a return and a very awkward conversation with your contractor. We'd much rather help catch a mismatch early.

Customers notice the people

The thing our reviews mention most isn't a product. It's a person. Customers name our team members in their reviews more than anything else. Read more customer reviews.

Shower Kit Pre-Order Checklist

Grab your installation documents and a tape measure, then work through this list.

1Request the installation instructions and spec sheet with Get Installation Documents
2Compare the kit's dimensions to your stud-to-stud opening (see the rule of thumb below)
3Measure every doorway, hallway and turn on the path to the bathroom
4Confirm the drain location matches your plumbing, or plan the change
5Check the entry style you need: curbless, low-threshold or curbed
6Note what the manufacturer's instructions say about subfloor and framing
7Forward the documents to your contractor or plumber before they quote
8Check the Lead Time & Shipping Info tab and line up your installer
9Make sure someone can receive the freight delivery
10Write down your questions and call a Product Specialist

Rule of Thumb

Shower kits attach directly to the wall studs, and standard drywall is typically 1/2" thick. As a general estimate, add 1" to the current finished wall-to-wall measurement to approximate the stud-to-stud opening.

Example: 59" finished wall-to-wall + 1" = about 60" stud-to-stud

Note: This is only a rule of thumb and is not guaranteed. Wall construction varies, and lath-and-plaster wall thickness will vary. Always verify the actual stud-to-stud dimensions before ordering.

Want the components together?

Our walk-in shower kits bundle the base with the walls and accessories, or you can add a curbless shower accessory kit. Either way, there's one set of documents to review.

The Bottom Line: Should You Get the Installation Documents First?

Yes, every time.

It's free, it takes a few taps and it answers the three questions that matter most.

1

Will it fit?

The spec sheet answers it for the room and the path to the room.

2

Can my installer do it?

Forward the instructions and let them tell you before they quote.

3

Who do I call?

Us. A real Product Specialist, by phone, email or chat.

Read it before you order, not after it's in your hallway. Look for the Get Installation Documents banner beside Add to Cart.

Frequently Asked Questions About Installation Documents

Click a question below to expand the answer.

What does Get Installation Documents send me?

You choose what you need: installation instructions, spec sheets, lead time and the shipping map. We send them by email, text or both, so you can review them and share them with your installer before you order.

Is there a cost to get the installation documents?

No. The documents are free, and requesting them doesn't obligate you to buy anything.

Where do I find the Get Installation Documents button?

Look for the navy Get Installation Documents banner beside Add to Cart and tap "Send Them to Me." It appears on product pages that have documents to send.

Can I send the documents to my contractor?

Yes. Forward the email or text to your contractor, plumber or a family member helping with the project. The text link opens the documents on the product page and works for 180 days.

What's the difference between installation instructions and a spec sheet?

The spec sheet lists the product's dimensions, drain location and key details. The installation instructions walk through how the manufacturer says the product should be installed. You'll want both before ordering.

How do I know if a shower base will fit through my door?

Check the outside dimensions on the spec sheet, then measure every doorway, hallway and turn the base has to pass through, including trim. If it's close, call a Product Specialist before you order.

Will someone contact me after I request the documents?

A real EZ Able team member sees every request and may follow up to see if you have questions. Texts are only sent if you check the consent box, and you can reply STOP anytime. If you're not ready, each follow-up email includes a link to tell us when to check back, and we'll pause until then.

Can I talk to a real person about my project?

Yes. Call 877-392-2531, reply to any of our emails or contact EZ Able. You'll reach a Product Specialist who can talk through measurements, drains and project details.

Do the documents tell me how long my order will take?

Lead times are listed on the product page in the Lead Time & Shipping Info tab. Many shower bases are Made-Upon-Order, so check that tab before scheduling your installer.

Should I read the instructions before choosing between curbless and curbed?

Yes. The documents show what each base needs for the floor, framing and drain, which often decides the choice. Compare our curbless showers with a curbed base side by side. If water containment is your worry, read Curbless Shower: Will Water Get Out?

What if the documents raise more questions than they answer?

That's normal, and it's the point. Write your questions down and call or email us. It's much easier to sort them out before the product ships than after.
